4/25 Sports Wrap-Up: Big Night for Northeastern
Baseball
Northeastern scored four runs in the 7th inning to come back and defeat Southeastern on Tuesday night. The win gives the Jets (13-8, 10-1) a 1-game lead in the OHC South over the Trojans (15-4, 9-2) with the season close to winding down. Final score: NE 5 SE 3
West Liberty survived a close one against Cedarville after giving starting pitcher Chase Humphrey a 7 run lead. Cedarville clawed their way back into the game on a night that 5 different pitchers would take the hill for the Tigers. Ben Hyland and Thomas Allen came on in the last inning to shut the door and secure the win for the Tigers. Final score: WLS 11 CED 8
Fairbanks and Mechanicsburg finished a game that started on April 5th, before playing game two of the season series last night. The teams would split the two games, with Fairbanks taking game 1 and the Indians taking game 2. Final scores: FB 4 MB 2 and MB 9 FB 2
The Triad Cardinals made a short night of it, shutting out Catholic Central in a 6-inning run rule on Tuesday. The Cardinals had a great night on defense, committing zero errors in the field. The win keeps the Cardinals perfect in the OHC this season, but that record will be challenged on Wednesday when the Cardinals travel to West Liberty. Final score: TR 10 CC 0
Softball
Northeastern had a big night on the softball diamond as well on Tuesday, topping OHC South rival Southeastern to create a tie at the top of the division. For the Trojans, it has been a tough 2-week stretch, having gone 3-4 in that time and 3-2 in the OHC, all after starting the season with an 11-game win streak. This is a very talented Trojans team under long-time coach Randy Delaney, so this adversity will likely help them heading into the postseason. For the Jets, this is a big win, as they continue to ride an 8-game win streak of their own. Of their 6 losses on the season, four of them come from KR, Shawnee (2), and Tecumseh. The tough regular season schedule will have the Jets poised for a deep tournament run. Final score: NE 2 SE 0
Triad used an 18-hit, 1 error effort to secure an easy win over Catholic Central on Tuesday. The Cardinals bats have been on fire all season, and continue to impress as they remain just 2.5 games behind West Liberty in the OHC North. Final score: TR 14 CC 0
Just as the baseball teams did, Mechanicsburg and Fairbanks softball teams had to finish the game from April 5th before starting last night's game, and much like the baseball teams the softball teams split the victories on Tuesday. Fairbanks took game one in a tight contest, while Mechanicsburg won big in game two.
Final scores: FB 8 MB 7 and MB 16 FB 8
West Liberty softball remains on fire after a run-rule victory over Cedarville on Monday night. Sydnee Payer recorded the win on the mound for the Tigers.
